Smoke Opens New BBQ Stall at Cross Street Market

Smoke opened its new 250 sq. ft. BBQ stall today at Cross Street Market. The stall is adjacent to Nick’s Inner Harbor Seafood and at the former home of Tian’s Teriyaki.

This is the second location for Smoke which opened a couple years ago in Cockeysville. Smoke was started by longtime best friends Keith Thompson and Josh White who both lived in Los Angeles and worked in the music industry before opening the restaurant. Their passion for music can be seen on Smoke’s Instagram page where they perform BBQ-inspired rock songs. White has also been a chef for many years.

Smoke’s smoked BBQ menu includes sandwiches with chuck roll beef, pork, chicken, and tofu, along with platters including ribs and wings. White told SouthBMore.com that some of the most popular items include the Boss Dawg sandwich which includes pulled pork, house-cured bacon, cheddar, cole slaw, crispy onions, jalapeño-bacon glaze, and pickles. He also raved about the wings that are smoked and grilled and topped with Smoke’s house BBQ sauce. Sides include cole slaw and chips, and they are hoping to add smoked beans soon.

For drinks, Smoke’s Cross Street Market stall will serve Zeke’s Nitro Draught coffee and Boylan’s sodas. Smoke will use the Cross Street Market’s upcoming market-wide liquor license in the future.

White told SouthBMore.com that the stall took about a week to get ready. It includes a black and white color theme with the Smoke logo, and a bench covered in rock and roll pictures that seats 8 to 10 people.

Smoke’ stall location is temporary as the market works through phased renovations, but Smoke will be a permanent part of the new Cross Street Market. At its final stall, there will be window, called “called Second-Hand Smoke,” taking late-night orders.

White told SouthBMore.com that Smoke’s second location came together after Arsh Mirmiran of Caves Valley Partners, the redevelopment team at Cross Street Market, “randomly came in to eat” at Smoke and later asked if they would be interested in opening a location at the Cross Street Market. Thompson and White had already been thinking about opening a location in Baltimore City.

“We are super excited to be open,” said White. “I don’t know if Baltimore is ready for us.”

Smoke will be open every day from 11am to 7pm.

Smoke will join Sundays, a creative doughnut and fried chicken sandwich concept from Phil Han of Dooby’s; Cookie Dough & Co., a stall serving safe-to-eat edible cookie dough; and a soup and yogurt parfait stall Prescription Chicken as new tenants at the Cross Street Market. All three will open in the near future.

Several existing merchants have signed on for an additional two years as the redevelopment begins. These tenants include Steve’s Lunch, Fenwick Choice Meats, Kwon’s Fresh Produce, and The Pretzel Twist. New tenants coming to Cross Street Market in the future include Annapolis-based Ceremony Coffee Roasters; DC-based Cucina Al Volo, which will sell pastas with locally-sourced ingredients; and Sarah Simington, owner of Federal Hill’s Blue Moon Too, who will open a stall selling quirky home goods.

Cross Street Market vendors that recently closed include The Flower Shop, Mondawmin Chicken, and Tian’s Teriyaki. The Flower Shop relocated to 1206 Ridgely St. in Pigtown/Carroll-Camden Industrial Area. Big Jim’s Deli announced its last day of business will be December 16th.

Big Jim’s Deli Announces It Will Close After 38 Years at Cross Street Market

After 38 years in business, Big Jim’s Deli announced it will close at the Cross Street Market on December 16th. Owner Anna Epsilantis posted the following to Big Jim’s Facebook page:

In 1979 when my Dad, Big Jim, asked me to fill in at the deli until he found new help, I had no idea I would still be here today. Over the past 38 years, I have met so many good people and made many good friends. I want to thank you all for your support and being part of my life. The new redevelopment team and I have mutually agreed to part ways. I plan to close my family business on December 16, 2017. I wish the remaining merchants and the new merchants in the Cross Street Market the best of luck.

Big Jim’s Deli has a 7-day Beer/Wine license. That license can be transferred to a new location or sold to another business in Federal Hill or Baltimore City.

Epsilantis declined to provide any additional comments to SouthBMore.com.

Cross Street Market is being redeveloped by Caves Valley Partners (CVP). Cana Development is leasing the property and Mackenzie is overseeing construction and property management. The collective team took over in January.

CVP recently announced that four new stalls will open soon at Cross Street Market. Four existing businesses have also agreed to extensions, and three new businesses have been announced and will join the market in the future.

The Flower Shop, Mondawmin Chicken, and Tian’s Teriyaki have recently closed at the Cross Street Market. The Flower Shop relocated to 1206 Ridgely St. in Pigtown/Carroll-Camden Industrial Area.

The revised plan for the redevelopment of the market allows for the facility and its existing merchants to stay open throughout the phased renovation process, which is expected to accelerate in early 2018 and be completed by mid-2019. The middle section of the block-long market will be renovated first. During the construction, tenants will occupy stalls closer to Light St. and S. Charles St. Exterior improvements will also be included in the first phase.

Legislation was created in the Maryland General Assembly this year which allows CVP to apply for a market-wide liquor license.

New Boutique ‘Gifted’ Opens on Cross Street in Federal Hill, Sells Locally-Made Products

Brooke Russ opened the Gifted boutique in a 325 sq. ft. space at 46 E. Cross St. in Federal Hill. The space was formerly the home of Zelda Zen and Pixilated Federal Hill. It has also been used for several pop-up shops in recent years.

Russ is the owner of Trisha’s Almond Toffee, which is sold online as well as at local festivals and events. Russ uses a commercial kitchen in Morrell Park to make the toffee. She came across the opportunity to open Gifted in Federal Hill after speaking with her Morrell Park landlord, who is also the owner of the Cross Street building. Russ has always been interested in having store for her toffee business and the space was a good fit.

Russ decided to call some of her friends who she had met at festivals around Baltimore and who also have artisan businesses to see if they’d be interested in selling products at Gifted, which opened on Black Friday. The entire plan and setup of the store all came together in just a few weeks, according to Russ. She said the store’s name is inspired by the talents of the vendors sold at the store, but also because it’s a place to buy gifts.

Gifted sells Trisha’s Almond Toffee, along with handmade products from eight additional, mostly-local businesses. Items include women’s clothing, jewelry, framed artwork, wine glasses, pillows, cards, candles, and Maryland- and holiday-themed items. Several items sold at Gifted benefit charitable causes.

Russ is undecided yet if Gifted will be a pop-up store or a permanent fixture in Federal Hill, but she confirmed it will be open until at least Christmas Eve. She will use the time to get a feel for running the store and the customer response.

Gifted is open Thursday through Sunday.

Gifted joins several other new Federal Hill boutiques including CJKollective, Echoes Vintage, Irregular Exposure Showroom & Fashion Academy, and Thistle Butter Collective.

Big Jim's Deli to close at Cross Street Market

Big Jim’s Deli, a longtime sandwich shop at Cross Street Market, will close its doors Dec. 16.

Owner Anna Epsilantis announced the closure Monday morning with a post on the deli’s Facebook page. The closure comes as Caves Valley Partners plans a massive overhaul of the Federal Hill market.

Saturday Traffic Modifications for Race 13.1 Baltimore

Traffic Modifications for the Race 13.1 Baltimore, on Saturday, Dec 2 Impacting Inner Harbor, Federal Hill, Key Highway, Riverside, and Locust Point.

The Baltimore City Department of Transportation would like to advise motorists of the temporary traffic modifications that will be in effect for the Race 13.1 Baltimore which will be held on Saturday, December 02, 2017. The event will start and end at the Canton Waterfront Park.

The marathon kicks off at 7:00 a.m. and will proceed right on Boston Street, then right on Clinton Street to the turnaround point just before Keith Avenue. The course proceeds left on Boston Street, left on Aliceanna Street, left onto S. Caroline Street, and right at Lancaster Street to enter the Inner Harbor promenade. The route continues along the promenade around the World Trade Center to Rash Field, loop around Rash Field and exit the promenade past the Ritz Carlton Residences. The course proceeds left on Key Highway, left on the Key Highway Extension, right on Hull Street, and left on E. Fort Avenue to the turnaround point near Nicholson Street. Participants will return via the same route to enter the Waterfront Promenade at the corner of Aliceanna and Boston Streets and finish at the Canton Waterfront Park.

In preparation for the event, lane closures will be in effect along the race route wherever possible. In addition, the following roads will be closed during the race on Saturday, December 02, 2017:
• Eastbound lanes of Boston Street will be closed from Fleet to Clinton Streets
• Northbound lanes of Aliceanna Street will be closed from S. Caroline to Boston Streets

During the event, temporary traffic stops may be implemented for the safety of participants. Motorists traveling in this vicinity should be on the watch for pedestrians and are encouraged to use alternate routes.
