Otto Turkish Cuisine Opens in Federal Hill

Orkun Ayrac, his cousin Emrah Gulum, and Gulum’s wife Pembe have opened Otto Turkish Cuisine at 1043 S. Charles St. in Federal Hill. Otto is subleasing the space from Grano Pasta Bar, which closed in January.

The Otto team is originally from Turkey and is bringing Turkish family recipes to the new restaurant. They have many years of experience in the restaurant industry.

Everything served at Otto is made in house. The menu includes cold and hot appetizers, main dishes, and desserts. According to Ayrac, popular items include Manti, which is Turkish beef dumplings topped with yogurt and garlic butter, and Shish Kebab Wraps, which can be made with beef, ground lamb, or chicken and are topped with imported Turkish spices. Ayrac is excited to introduce the area to the Otto Burger, a Turkish take on the American classic.

Appetizers include hummus, baba ghanoush, cig kofte, and calamari, and desserts include baklava, cheesecake, and brownies. For drinks, Otto offers Turkish black tea, homemade mint lemonade, an orange soda imported ftom Turkey, American sodas, and Otto’s yogurt drink. Otto is also BYOB.

Otto seats about 10 people and offers carryout, as well as delivery through many online partners. The Otto team made some updates to the former Grano space by adding in low-top table seating, replacing a bar top, and adding some kitchen equipment. The space has many reclaimed wood accents and features counter seating facing the window.

Otto will be open Sunday through Thursday from 11am to 11pm, and Friday and Saturday from 11am to 2am.

Ayrac told SouthBMore.com that opening Otto is a dream that was a long time in the making. “We are really excited and we’re going to have fun,” he said. “We like Federal Hill because there are a lot of young people and we are young too. We are happy to bring a Turkish restaurant to the area.”

South Baltimore Business Roundup

American Apparel Closes

The American Apparel at 1125 Light St. in Federal Hill has closed. American Apparel recently filed for bankruptcy and was sold to Canadian company Gildan Activeware last year. All American Apparel stores will be closing.

The Light St. space is now vacant.

Fort Ave Fitness Closes

Fort Ave Fitness at 301 E. Fort Ave. in Federal Hill/Riverside has closed. The 3,800 sq. ft. family-focused gym opened in December 2016 in the lower-level space of the former hospital building.

Owner Michael Vogel told SouthBMore.com that the closing was a financial decision.

A New Master Plan for Camden Yards?

As Camden Yards turns 25, The Baltimore Sun recently took a look at its impact on the City. The article highlights future ideas for the stadium, which include a new master plan by the Orioles and Maryland Stadium Authority to attract more people to the area on days without ballgames. From the article:

“The kind of spirited neighborhood you see around Fenway Park in Boston, Petco in San Diego, [Chicago’s] Wrigley, in Denver — that’s the kind of urban energy that I think Camden Yards strives for but it is limited by its big-box neighbors,” said Smith, the Los Angeles Dodgers’ senior vice president of planning and development.

For now though, the authority is talking about a number of proposals with the team in and around Oriole Park, Kelso said. One might be post-game concerts near Camden Station. The former home of the Sports Legends Museum, some of the building is currently leased month to month to Geppi’s Entertainment Museum while the stadium authority considers its options.

Another proposal would relocate the Mid-Atlantic Sports Network’s production studios from the warehouse to Camden Station so fans could watch programming.

The goal would be to create some of the energy found on game days on Eutaw Street, the plaza between the stadium and the warehouse, where fans mingle and the smell of barbecue and hot dogs permeates the air.

“It’s not impossible that there could be a venue inside the stadium that is open every day of the year so that people can come, they can see into the stadium,” Kelso said. “Maybe it’s a bar or restaurant — something that gets people in the habit of coming to Camden Yards for something other than just a sporting event.”

Camden Pub Closes

On February 1st, Camden Pub closed in Ridgely’s Delight/Downtown after 25 years in business. From The Baltimore Sun:

Calling it a “tough decision,” Liberto said a combination of factors — including declining revenue and rising operational costs — led to the closure.

As recently as 2014, Liberto was optimistic about Camden Pub’s future. Thanks in part to the Orioles’ American League East division crown and postseason run, Camden Pub had its best financial year to date, Liberto said.

But in April 2015, the rioting and unrest that followed protests surrounding the death of Freddie Gray caused Camden Pub to lose $30,000 in potential revenue that week, Liberto said, and the bar never recovered. That October, he put Camden Pub up for sale, but it continued to operate.

Though he blames “a lot of factors,” Liberto said, “things just started to change” after the unrest. Now, he believes “people are afraid to come into the city.”

Water Taxi Hiring Events

Kevin Plank’s Plank Industries is now hiring for the Baltimore Water Taxi. From a Build Port Covington email:

Baltimore Water Taxi and Sagamore Development are teaming up to host two job fairs next month.

For more than 35 years, residents and visitors have taken the Baltimore Water Taxi across the Harbor to work, play and see all the sights the City has to offer. As their fleet expands, Baltimore Water Taxi is looking for new crew members to help them continue their long tradition of service to the waterfront.

Seeking to hire approximately 25 new employees, including deckhands and captains, the job fairs will be held at the Center for Urban Families on April 25th from 10 am – 2 pm and the UA House at Fayette on April 29th from 10 am – 2 pm.
