Speed Cameras and a Commercial Vehicle Monitor Coming to South Baltimore Neighborhoods

South Baltimore is getting new speed cameras, as well as a Commercial Vehicle Height Monitoring System, as part of a new Automated Traffic Violation Enforcement System (ATVES) initiative by the Baltimore City Department of Transportation (DOT).

Former ‘Rachel’ Building and Restaurant Space in Riverside Scheduled for Auction

Rachel New American Cuisine at 554 E. Fort Ave. in Federal Hill/Riverside closed in May 2018. Now, the 3,792 sq. ft. three-story building and restaurant space, along with its furniture, equipment, and seven-day beer, wine, and liquor license, are scheduled for a September 7th Alex Cooper auction. The opening bid is $350,000 with an initial deposit of $15,000.

The building features a first-floor bar and dining room, a large second-floor kitchen and dining room, and a third-story office space. The property was renovated before the opening of Rachel in January 2017.

All of the assets in the sale are now owned by the landlord, not by any of the previous restaurant operators. Since the mid-2000s, the location has been the home of Soigné, Sly Fox Pub, Ullswater, Tuscan Fresh, Breadbangers, and Rachel.

The restaurant space is also currently available for lease.

This auction is the latest news of recently-closed, high-end restaurants beginning to take on new ownership. The former Bluegrass will become AJ’s on Hanover, led by the team of Andrew Carter and Jesse Selke of Delia Foley’s and Smaltimore; Wine Market Bistro closed and was rebranded as Ludlow Market, Bar & Bottle Shop by owner Chris Span; the former Regi’s Bistro was purchased by Greenspring Realty Parnters at auction; the former In Bloom/Liv2Eat and its property were recently listed for sale; and the former Metropolitan business is currently listed for sale.

South Baltimore Business Roundup

Former Otterbein Swim Club Lifeguard Signs with the Chicago Bears

Former Maryland Terrapin linebacker and Otterbein Swim Club lifeguard Josh Woods signed with the Chicago Bears in June as an undrafted free agent after getting a tryout with the team. Woods played his high school ball at Mcdonough School. From a Testudo Times article in June:

After having a solid rookie minicamp and being invited back for a veteran camp tryout, he’ll join Cavon Walker up there and make Chicago the second team (joining Carolina) with two rookie Terps on the squad.

A player who, before the season, expressed a desire to get into coaching when his playing days were done, Woods earned pro looks after a breakout senior season. In nine starts, he had a career-high 62 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss, four pass breakups, two interceptions and a forced fumble.

Woods will be working this preseason to make the Bears roster or practice squad.

Otterbein Swim Club posted on Facebook, “Congratulations former lifeguard Josh Woods (Summer ’12 and ’13) on signing on to the Chicago Bears! We are so proud of you and can’t wait to cheer you on!”

Cam Newton Brings the Panthers for Workouts Downtown

Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton generated a lot of excitement in the area a couple years ago when he and some of his teammates, who were in town for a passing camp, stopped by Baltimore Beach for some pickup volleyball.

Visiting Baltimore has now become a yearly tradition for Newton and the Panthers. One of the stops earlier this summer was Downtown for workouts at the Under Armour Performance Center (UAPC) powered by FX Fitness at 10 Light Street. Digital Harbor graduate and fourth round draft pick tightend Ian Thomas also came back to his hometown for the workouts. From a FX Fitness press release:

The preseason workouts are part of an ongoing relationship between Newton and Under Armour, who sponsors the quarterback, and elite personal trainer and FX Studios CEO Nate Costa, who has trained Newton since the beginning of his NFL career in 2011. Newton and his team of professional football players come annually to Baltimore for rigorous exercises with Costa and the coaches of FX Fitness, an umbrella association of FX Studios that manages and operates the UAPC facilities.

Newton’s trip to Baltimore included other NFL professionals: Rasheed Bailey, Austin Duke, Torrey Smith, DJ Moore, Christian McCaffrey, Moses Frazier, Greg Olsen, Garrett Gilbert, Ian Thomas, Jarius Wright, Kyle Allen, and Damiere Byrd. The group of players, informally known as the “Camsters,” train twice a day for two hours each session, concentrating particularly on strength and conditioning.

Costa was able to diversify the team’s training agenda this year by utilizing the UAPC at 10 Light Street and Sagamore Farm in Glyndon, Md., a 530-acre farm property acquired by Under Armour CEO Kevin Plank in 2007. The UAPC at 10 Light Street is a state-of-the-art fitness facility that features 35,000 sq ft. of space including a performance turf field.

Here is video of workouts at Sagamore Farm from Brandon E. Kamin:

New Doughnut Shop Opening Next to Pickles Pub

Pickles Pub is opening The Big Green Doughnut Machine in a rowhome next to the bar at 520 Washington Blvd. in Downtown/Ridgely’s Delight. From The Baltimore Sun:

The to-go counter will sell cakes, pies and signature green-glazed doughnuts as well as other seasonal flavors.

“Between my partners and I, we eat so many [doughnuts] we think we’re the experts,” Cotton said.

The bakery will have a separate entrance but also be accessible from the pub, where diners can order from their tables.

Four years ago, Pickles Pub began to make its own bread and pretzels. The new bakery will expand on the idea, sharing the restaurant’s existing kitchen space.

Pickles Pub is planning a multi-year expansion with a dozen new locations. The first new Pickles Pub will be at 6500 Riverview Ave. in Dundalk.

Pitamore Opening a Second Location Downtown

Pitamore, which opened Downtown at 30 Light St. last year, is now opening a second location Downtown right behind Pickles Pub at Greene and Dover St. From Baltimore Business Journal:

Pitamore, the downtown quick-serve Mediterranean concept, is opening a second location less than a mile from its Light Street shop.

The eatery has signed a lease for a 2,085-square-foot space at the corner of Greene and Dover streets near Camden Yards and the University of Maryland Medical Center and University of Maryland, Baltimore. The location is expected to open in the spring.

Poké World Opening Downtown

Downtown and South Baltimore now has four poké restaurants in the works as Poke World has announced it will open a 30-seat restaurant at 55 Market Place near Power Plant Live. From Baltimore Business Journal:

Poké World’s menu will offer a half-dozen signature bowls, including the Hawaiian classic, with ahi tuna, green and red onion, seaweed, cucumber and sesame seeds, and the Tofu Treat, a vegetarian option. Customers will also be able to build their own bowls with a “Poké Your Way” option.

Liu said Poké World will also have a menu of tea options, including some traditional Taiwanese tea drinks like iced oolong tea.

Liu chose the downtown location for its foot traffic. The restaurant is on the same block as Port Discovery Children’s Museum and a few steps from the bars and restaurants at Power Plant Live.

Poké Bowl is opening locations in Federal Hill and Downtown, and PokéOno is opening a location at Southside Marketplace in Riverside.

Large Property in Brooklyn Under Contract

A 33-acre industrial yard at 601 W. Patapsco Ave. in Brooklyn is under contract with Copart of Connecticut Inc. for $4.5 million, according to Baltimore Business Journal. The sale is part of bankruptcy proceedings. From the article:

The yard is located on the Baltimore City-Baltimore County line near Cherry Hill and Brooklyn along the Patapsco River and is made up of four separate properties. The majority of the acreage, consisting of two parcels of 19.3 acres and 13.5 acres respectively, houses an “income-producing” industrial yard that has more than 120 tenants, according to a brochure prepared by Melville, New York-based A&G Realty Partners LLC, which is marketing the property.

The 19.3 acre property is located in Baltimore County. The 13.5 acre property along with two smaller properties of 0.14 and 0.24 acres are all located in Baltimore City.

Baltimore Museum of Industry Asking Neighbors to Pick a New Color for Its 100-Foot Crane

Baltimore Museum of Industry Release:

The Baltimore Museum of Industry (BMI) today announced a call for the public’s help in the final step of transforming the original 100-foot-tall shipyard crane that overlooks the museum’s waterfront campus entrance. The museum is asking neighbors, residents and patrons of the museum to vote for the new color of the crane: orange, green, blue or red?

Votes can be cast online at www.thebmi.org or by texting the color of choice—’red’, ‘orange’, ‘green’ or ‘blue’—to 484848. Voting closes August 31. The winning color will be announced on September 6.

In 2016, the museum launched the Save the Crane campaign with an online, crowd-sourced fund drive to fully restore the historic 1942 crane. The first phase of restoration—cleaning and sealing the crane’s cab, which included removing more than 350 lbs. of pigeon guano—was completed in the spring of 2016. Now in its final phases of the renovation, the museum invites the public to help with the final step: painting the crane.

“We are so thankful for the many individuals, corporations, foundations, and public funders who have helped to make the crane’s ongoing transformation possible,” said Anita Kassof, executive director of the BMI. “Having the community be a part of this final phase is very important to us and we look forward to the fully-restored and freshly painted whirley crane becoming a celebrated and cherished icon in Baltimore for decades to come.”

History of the Crane

Built in 1942 and dubbed a “whirley crane” for its ability to turn 360 degrees, this Bethlehem Steel Clyde Model 17 DE 90 crane was instrumental in Bethlehem Steel’s prolific World War II shipbuilding effort. The crane’s unique full rotation feature allowed it to help the Bethlehem Steel Fairfield shipyard hit record-breaking production numbers of Liberty and Victory ships during the war. With more than 44,000 workers and dozens of whirley cranes, the yard was building one vessel per month by mid-1943, and launching an average of one ship every thirty-five hours.

Unlike many of its counterparts, this particular crane’s service continued long after peace was restored. Following World War II, the crane was transferred to Bethlehem Steel’s Key Highway shipyard. In an unprecedented experimental project in 1951, the crane helped “jumboize” a former Victory war ship for commercial use. This process involved adding a large midsection to the ship, and its historic success paved the way for many similar projects.

The crane remained in active service until 1982, when the yard closed. Following the closing, the BMI, eager to help Baltimore hold onto its incredible shipbuilding heritage, pursued the crane as a donation. The shipyard’s new owners obliged and the property’s last standing crane was disassembled, sent down the Inner Harbor on barges, painted, and reassembled where it still stands at the BMI today.

Riverside Park Pool Opens Today, August 11th

The long wait for the Riverside Park Pool is over as it will open for the first time this summer today at 12pm. There will be free admission to the pool on Saturday and  Sunday.

Baltimore City Recreation and Parks was originally scheduled to open the Riverside Park Pool on June 23rd, but water flooded into the basement pump room when the pool was filled, leading to a series of needed repairs.

A gate valve failure led to the flooding and subsequent electrical damage. The gate valve was replaced and the pool needed a new 600-amp load center, a new transformer, small load centers, and a water heater disconnect. Much of electrical work was delayed until the pump room was completely dry.

The work to repair the pool took several weeks longer than expected. Recreation and Parks began filling the pool this week.

Riverside Park Pool will be open Monday to Friday from 1230pm to 330pm for open swim, and Monday to Thursday from 4pm to 8pm for programmed swimming sessions. On Fridays, the pool will close at 7pm after family/lap swim starting at 4pm. On Saturdays, the pool will be open for open swim from 12pm to 430pm and 5pm to 7pm. On Sundays, the pool will be open from 1pm to 3pm and 330pm to 6pm for open swim.

The pool will be open Monday through Saturday from 10am to 12pm for Baby Country Club.

Riverside Park Pool is scheduled to close for the season on September 3rd.
