Chocolate Covered Strawberry Shop ‘Berries by Quicha’ Coming to Federal Hill

LaQuicha Brown is bringing her second location of Berries by Quicha to Federal Hill. Brown started her business three years ago as a hobby, making chocolate covered strawberries for friends for Valentine’s Day, and it quickly grew after that. She opened her first location in the lobby of the Best Western Plus Hotel at the Baltimore Tavel Plaza, and is excited to open her second location before the end of the year at 920 Light St. in the former home of Hannah Nails Spa.

Berries by Quicha offers more than 17 flavors of chocolate covered and gourmet strawberries including Snickers, White Chocolate Swizzle, White Oreo, Bacon Berry, Dark Chocolate, and more, plus cheesecake strawberries, sugar free flavors, and yogurt covered strawberries. Customers can walk in and buy a strawberry for $2.59, or get discounted orders of a half dozen, dozen, or more.

Brown and her team, which is comprised of all family members, can also assemble custom orders for clients including 3D designs. Recent orders included Morgan State-themed strawberries, her alma mater, and strawberries that included a custom note asking friends to be in a bridal party. Berries by Quicha also offer chocolate covered strawberry bouquets.

All of the strawberries at Berries by Quicha come from local farms. She is hoping to add additional berries in the future like boysenberries and acai berries. Though the strawberries are for dessert, Brown will be educating customers on the health benefits of berries.

Brown eyed a second location for over a year, and fell in love with the space in Federal Hill. “I love the history, the foot traffic, and the eclectic mix of businesses,” she said. She also noted that she likes the close proximity to a lot of business and residents.

Berries by Quicha will be open Monday-Thursday from 12pm-7pm, and Friday and Saturday from 11am-11pm. They will most likely be closed on Sundays.

Diamondback Brewing and Order & Chaos Coffee Team on Cold Brew Stout

Two South Baltimore businesses are partnering as Diamondback Brewing Company is releasing Order & Chaos Cold Brew Coffee Stout. The new brew will premier at a release party at Diamondback’s brewery and taproom in Locust Point on December 23rd.

The Order & Chaos Cold Brew Coffee Stout is crafted with Order & Chaos’ Houseblend Cold Brew. It highlights “the brewery’s hop-filled mastery and the Houseblend’s smooth, subtle notes of nutty cocoa” and features “rich, locally-roasted beans from Pfefforkorn,” according to a press release. Pfefforkorn has been roasting coffee for more than 100 year and is also based in Locust Point.

“South Baltimore has become a hot spot for new businesses, and we love supporting that growth through local collaboration,” said Ryan Herzing, general manager of Order & Chaos Coffee, in the release. “Our neighbors at Diamondback Brewing Company are recognized for balancing drinkability with uncompromising flavor, and we’re looking forward to contributing flavors of our own that complement that balance.”

“The Diamondback brand reflects our passion for industry innovation and local culture,” said Colin Marshall, co-founder of Diamondback Brewing Company, in the release. “This partnership with Order & Chaos Coffee was the perfect opportunity to move forward with the release of our first stout, and we’re excited to share it with the public.”

Diamondback moved into its new McHenry Row facility in November. Prior to that it contract brewed its beers in Virginia and Baltimore, and occupied a storage facility and office in the Curtis Bay area of South Baltimore.

Order & Chaos Coffee opened at 1410 Key Hwy. in October and is the creation of communications and marketing agency Planit.

Porter’s Pub to Reopen as The Outpost, Jesse Sandlin from Top Chef to Lead Kitchen

The long-anticipated reopening of the former Porter’s Pub is coming soon as The Outpost American Tavern will open in the space at 1032 Riverside Ave. in Federal Hill. The Outpost is owned by neighborhood resident Chris Frisone and Seung Cho, who previously worked at Cross Street Market. Former Top Chef television show contestant Jesse Sandlin, who has worked at Petit Louis, Oliver’s Speck, and Jokers & Thieves, will lead the kitchen. The team at The Outpost will be advised by the owners of Blue Agave and Don’t Know Tavern.

The Outpost was described by Frisone as an American-themed neighborhood restaurant. “What Porter’s was is exactly what we want it to be,” he said. “We want to have lots of regulars and make everyone feel at home like a ‘Cheers’ of Federal Hill.”

Porter’s closed in July 2014.

The Outpost will keep the same approximately 60-person layout Porter’s had with a bar room and a dining room. The team performed a mostly cosmetic remodel of the restaurant and updated and modernized the kitchen. Frisone said they would brighten up the space with a new color scheme and by keeping the blinds open on the windows facing Cross St. and Riverside Ave.

Frisone called the menu “creative American” with everything from bar food to salads, sandwiches, and entrĂ©es. There will be a small permanent menu and many daily specials. “We want our patrons to be able to eat something different here five days a week,” he said. The Outpost will open every day at 3pm for happy hour, and will be open for brunch on Saturdays and Sundays.

The Outpost will pour beer from its 10 draft lines and offer “creative cocktails” along with a full compliment of beer, wine, and liquor offerings.

The Outpost team is working through inspections and hopes to open the restaurant in early January. It will hire 10 to 12 employees.
