Rice Crook Closes at Cross Street Market in Federal Hill

Korean rice bowl and steam bun stall Rice Crook has closed at Cross Street Market in Federal Hill. Rice Crook opened in 2019 and was the first to occupy its stall in the renovated Cross Street Market.

On October 15th, Rice Crook said on its Facebook page: “Very sad to announce that we are permanently closed.”

The Cross Street Market management team told SouthBMore.com two new concepts will open next month and announcements will be coming soon.

Recent closures at Cross Street Market include Rooster & Hen, Annoula’s Greek Kitchen, Ono Poké, and Royal Farms Chicken. New additions in recent months are Watershed, Atlas Fish Market, Southrn’ Spice, and Crepe Crazy.

Skateboarding Interaction in South Baltimore Seen By Millions on TikTok

Last week, Asen Gyenyame, a lifeguard at Riverside Park Pool who can often be seen skateboarding around South Baltimore, posted a video to his TikTok page of local realtor Alyssia Essig giving him some words of encouragement. The video has now been viewed 8.8 million times and has garnered 2.3 million likes.

@skatevibes01 She’s the best ##skatetok##skateboard##skater##karen##karenskatepark##skateboard##motivational##inspirational##sb##skate##skatetricks♬ Vas – jagger finn

Gyenyame, who often skates at Riverside Park or the Baltimore Museum of Industry, posts video clips of his newest tricks to his YouTube page (Skate Vibes) and social media accounts. He puts his iPhone on a tripod and has a camera strapped to his head to capture the videos.

Earlier this month, Gyenyame was trying nightmare flips (pop-shuvit double kickflip) under the gazebo at the Baltimore Museum of Industry. While eating her lunch from the parking lot, Essig saw his dedication and decided to give him a pep talk.

Gyenyame posted a video of their interaction titled with the description “She’s the best.”

In the video Essig said, “I wanted to tell you something. You’re gonna nail this today. You’re gonna nail this today. You’re gonna do it, you’re so close.”

She added, “First off, whatever you do in your life, you’re going to knock it out of the park, only because you’re sitting here busting your ass just to nail this one trick. You’ll do that the rest of your life, no matter what it is, you won’t get it, you’ll try, you’ll try, you’ll try, you’ll try again.  You’re going to nail this today. Do you believe in yourself?”

“Of course,” said Gyenyame.

The two then high-fived and Essig said, “Have a great Sunday.”

Gyenyame added captions to the video which read, “we need more people like this” and “felt super inspired and then landed two after this talk.”

WMAR reunited Essig and Gyenyame in a heartwarming segment last week. Both were touched by the positive interactions received from people who saw the video.

Detroit-Style Pizza Bar ‘Cross Street Public House’ Opens in Federal Hill

Cross Street Public House has opened at the former 10,000 sq. ft. home of Stalking Horse at 26 E. Cross St. in Federal Hill. This “upscale tavern” with a menu focused on Detroit-style pizzas is owned by Andrew Carter and Jesse Selke from the Delia Foley’s Group, as well as industry veteran Jason Zink.

Carter and Selke are the owners of Delia Foley’s Pub and AJ’s on Hanover St. in Federal Hill and Smaltimore in Canton. Carter was the manager of Stalking Horse from 2008 to 2014. Zink is the former owner of No Idea Tavern, Don’t Know Tavern, and Smaltimore, and is now a partner in the Abbey Burger Bistro locations in Fells Point, Mount Washington, and Havre de Grace.

Zink has spent the past year working on his pizza recipes and traveled to Detroit to learn from the late Shawn Randazzo of Detroit Style Pizza Company. Randazzo, who passed away in December after a battle with brain cancer, was a two-time World Champion Pizza Maker of the Year.

Zink also hosted a Detroit-style pizza pop-up at SoBo Market last December.

Detroit-style pizza is a deep dish, focaccia pizza cooked in blue steel pans. This style is known for its burnt cheese edges and sauce drizzled across the top. Cross Street Public House offers 8″x10″ pizzas including a Margherita, spicy pepperoni, Coney Island hot dog-inspired pizza, cheesesteak pizza, BBQ chicken pizza, s’mores pizza, and more.

Cross Street Public House hopes to add thin crust, bar-style pizzas in the future.

The menu also includes salads; sandwiches including Nashville hot chicken, chicken parmesan, and Carolina pulled pork; and appetizers such as baked wings, Supreme Pizza Dip, loaded pierogis, and fried tortellini.

The Cross Street Public House team worked  with Chef Frank Campanella on the menu. Felipe Escobar, the kitchen manager from Delia Foley’s, is running the kitchen at Cross Street Public House.

The bar will focus on craft beers, signature cocktails, and crushes.

Carter said the goal of the new concept is to “change the nightclub atmosphere.” The team took on a full renovation of the building adding more TVs, a 16-beer tap draft system, and arcade games such as Golden Tee, Pacman, Skee-ball, and shuffleboard, and tables with interactive games built into them. The team also removed the slushy machines and DJ booth, and will soon be adding garage doors to the front of the building.

A parklet outdoor dining space has been added to the street. Cross Street Public House has teamed with next-door neighbor and fellow new restaurant Nola on a tent for the two parklets. Cross Street Public House will be adding televisions to its parklet.

Cross Street Public House is currently open Wednesday to Saturday from 5pm to 2am and Sunday from 11am to 2am. It may add lunch hours on Fridays and Saturdays in the future as the team navigates through the current labor shortages.

Cross Street Pubic House will have its grand opening on November 6th.

Cross Street Public House joins a flurry of new restaurants coming to the unit block of E. Cross St. in Federal Hill. No Way Rosé, P.A.L.M, and Yeeros Plus will open soon; Nola opened last week; and Watershed opened in recent months. A yet-to-be-announced concept will also be taking over the former Crazy Lil’s. The team at Cross Street Public House is excited to be around this new wave of activity in Federal Hill.

Klik Solutions Takes Over Key Highway Office Building

Klik Solutions has taken over the approximately 4,000 sq. ft., one-story office building at 1000 Key Hwy. East in Locust Point. The building was recently the offices for Weller Development Company before it moved to Port Covington.

Klik relocated from a space that was approximately the same size at the 1100 Wicomico office building in Pigtown. This is the company’s fourth office since it was founded nine years ago. The other two offices were in Federal Hill.

Klik offers managed IT solutions, cloud solutions, and cybersecurity. It was founded by Neil Konstantoulas and Arthur Olshansky. The company was called Federal Hill Solutions until 2019.

The company has about 40 employees in Baltimore, and opened an office in Kiev, Ukraine in 2018. Olshansky grew up in Ukraine and praised the country for its focus on STEM education. Klik will use the office to support its American clients 24/7, as well as to grow its business in Europe.

Konstantoulas and Olshansky began using 1100 Key Hwy. East in recent months to film the Klik TV video series. The space was being temporarily used as office space by property owner Goodier Properties, and then Goodier asked if Klik wanted to take over the entire space. With the lease coming to an end in Pigtown and loving the waterfront atmosphere on Key Hwy., Konstantoulas and Olshansky decided to make the move to Locust Point.

The office building has Inner Harbor views as well as a parking lot; outdoor spaces on the water where grills and picnic tables will be added; and a pier, where Klik’s sailboat is now parked. Konstantoulas and Olshansky said it will be “a more exciting place to work” and they look forward to bringing in clients and hosting events.

Klik plans on adding a rowboat and pontoon boat to its property that can be used by its team.

A garage building behind Klik’s office is the home of Body in Rhythm Training and Capacity Fitness.

Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Klik will rotate employees between days in the office and virtual workdays. The new office has private offices as well as a large communal area where employees will rotate in. It also has a conference room and studio for Klik TV.

Konstantoulas and Olshansky said the new office setting has made more employees want to come into work. They are also excited to be steps away from some of their favorite South Baltimore restaurants including Southside Diner.

Nola Seafood and Spirits Opens on Cross Street in Federal Hill

Matthew Lasinski of the Alliance Restaurant Group and Ricardo Jones, owner of Sangria Patio Bar, have opened their New Orleans-inspired restaurant called Nola at 36 E. Cross St. in Federal Hill. Nola replaces Ryleigh’s Oyster, which closed in May of last year.

Jones and Lasinski are friends with New Orleans Chef Donnie Stykes, who is now the personal chef of Michael B. Jordan, and took trips together to Louisiana to tour some of Stykes’ favorite spots and to develop a menu.

“It will be an authentic-as-you-can-get New Orleans restaurant with crossover staples like crab cakes and crushes,” Lasinski told SouthBMore.com last month.

The menu features a raw bar; chargrilled oysters, which Lasinski fell in love with after trips to New Orleans; crawfish and seafood boils; gumbo; jambalaya; crawfish etoufee; po boys; Cajun-style catfish; and many other Creole-style dishes.

Francisco Lopez, who was once a chef at Ryleigh’s, is the chef at Nola.

Jones and Lasinski worked with Aaron Joseph and Ezra Allen of Cane Collective on a New Orleans-style cocktail list. Drinks include a hurricane and Abita beers.

Nola will have live jazz bands during the week, as well as karaoke nights and DJs.

Lasinski and Jones took on a full renovation of the building.

Nola has two levels of indoor seating, as well as outdoor seating on its patio and in its parklet.

Nola is open Monday to Friday from 4pm to 2am and Saturday and Sunday from 11am to 2am. Lasinski said he hopes to open for weekday lunch and brunch in the future once Nola gets in a good groove and can find the staff to fill the extra shifts.

Nola joins a flurry of new restaurants coming to the unit block of E. Cross St. in Federal Hill. No Way Rosé, Cross Street Public House, P.A.L.M., and two other yet-to-be-named concepts are coming soon and will join the recently-opened Watershed.

When asked if this was a new era for Cross St., Lasinski said, “I sure hope so. Some people have a less-than-positive impression of Cross St. As more people open and are doing new things, it will change the perception and bring in a wider breadth of customers.”

Insightin Health Expands at the Parker Metal Building

Insightin Health has moved into an 8,000 sq. ft. office space at the Parker Metal Building in Stadium Area. The healthcare technology startup’s new first-floor space is on the south end of the office building and is “six times larger” than its former space in the building.

Insightin Health is the first business to occupy the space in the newly-converted office building.

From Insightin CEO Enam Noor in Baltimore Business Journal:

Noor said Insightin, which has offices here and in Pittsburgh, has hired several new team members in recent months, including leadership-level folks who he said will be working to build out their specific teams. In February, following the close of its $12 million funding round, Noor said the company employed about 45 people overall. He expects to soon employ between 35 and 50 people in the Baltimore area alone, but did not disclose a company-wide hiring goal.

The Port Covington Development Team has announced new leasing partners for its 1.1 million sq. ft. Chapter 1B phase of construction that includes 400,000 sq. ft. of office space and 116,000 sq. ft. of retail. The new partners are:

Terri Harrington, managing principal of the newly-formed Harrington Commercial Real Estate Services, who will assist in office space leasing.

“I am excited to be involved with such an important, catalytic development,” said Harrington in a press release. “Baltimore has such a strong tradition of neighborhoods and as part of the nearby community of South Baltimore I am personally invested in the project’s success. It’s exciting to be involved with the new, waterfront community in Port Covington that will bring a much-anticipated mix of unique uses, attractive retail, and welcoming public spaces – all of which will be exceptionally attractive to office users.”

McDevitt and Cana Development have additionally been announced as the retail leasing team for Port Covington.

“The scale, location, and best-in-class design of Port Covington is the magical combination of ingredients that will result in a world-class, dynamic, waterfront neighborhood,” said McDevitt Chief Executive Officer Wade McDevitt in a press release.  “We are thrilled to have the opportunity to introduce this remarkable new community to transformative tenants who will embrace and contribute to the diverse and vibrant Baltimore culture and lifestyle.”

“As a Baltimore-based company, we are excited to play a role in this transformational, new addition to our city,” said Michael Morris, principal at CANAdev, in a press release. “While supporting McDevitt to identify and procure the best-in-class retail, our goal is to ensure that Port Covington provides our local retail community with the opportunity to participate while uniquely representing our city.”

Vegan Shop ‘Cloudy Donut Co.’ Opens in Federal Hill

Vegan shop Cloudy Donut Co. opened last weekend at 1049 S. Charles St. in Federal Hill. The retail space was mostly recently a CBD shop.

Cloudy Donut Co. is owned by Home Maid Owner Derrick Faulcon and has another location in Hamilton-Lauraville. Faulcon started Cloudy Donut Co. in January 2020 after buying the business Donut Alliance. He opened Home Maid, which is not a vegan restaurant, in Federal Hill in 2016 and has been selling the donuts at the restaurant.

“We have Home Maid in Federal Hill, so it only made sense to bring our donut shop there as well,” said Zewiditu Ruffin, partnerships director of Cloudy Donut Co., in June.

Cloudy Donut Co. is also planning a location in Fells Point and Brooklyn Heights, NY, and will be launching a food truck.

The donuts do not include any dairy or by-products. Ruffin said dairy is replaced in the dough with apple sauce, noting the name Cloudy was chosen because the donuts are “light and airy like a cloud.”

Cloudy Donut Co. sells 40 different flavors of donuts. Popular options include Cookies ‘n Cream and Raspberry Rosé, as well as Snoop Doggy Donuts for dogs.

Ruffin said the majority of Cloudy Donut Co.’s customers are not vegans, but that the donuts provide a great option for vegans and people with dairy allergies.

Cloudy Donut Co. will just sell donuts and be carry-out only. It will be open Saturdays and Sunday from 10am to 3pm.

Residential Recycling Cart Distribution Underway in Baltimore City

Baltimore City Department of Public Works (DPW) has started delivering recycling carts to Baltimore City households. The carts will be distributed first to the communities with the lowest rates of recycling according to Esri’s Market Potential Index (MPI) database. The distribution process is expected to take four months.

Households in Baltimore will receive a 65-gallon blue recycling cart, which is the same size of the green trash carts. Residents can call 311 to apply for a small cart or to opt out completely. Postcards will be mailed to eligible households 30 to 45 days in advance of the recycling cart arriving.

DPW created a Recycling Opportunity Index (ROI) using the MPI database which ranks the combined statistic areas (CSAs) that have the most opportunity for increased recycling. The ranking system will guide DPW’s cart distribution plan.

The South Baltimore peninsula has two CSAs – Inner Harbor/Federal Hill and South Baltimore. They were ranked 50th and 49th out of 56 CSAs.

Washington Village/Pigtown ranked 19th, Poppleton/The Terraces/Hollins Market ranked 11th, Southwest Baltimore ranked 14th, Morrell Park/Violetville ranked 28th, Westport/Mount Winans/Lakeland ranked 8th, Cherry Hill ranked 12th, and Brooklyn/Curtis Bay/Hawkins Point ranked 3rd.

The $9-million plan to distribute recycling carts includes a $3-million grant from The Recycling Partnership.

The Recycling Partnership and the City of Baltimore estimates the new recycling carts have the potential to increase recycling in the city by an estimated 20,000 tons per year or nearly 200 pounds per household.
