South Baltimore Crime Updates

From Baltimore Police Department (BPD):

On Saturday, May 20th, 2023 at approximately 0201 hours Complainants reported that at approximately 0140 hours she and her friend, were at the swing sets in Federal Hill Park. Complainants reported that she turned around and observed two black males, wearing all black sweats, hoodies, and ski masks. In addition, complainant advised that they both had guns. One of the guns was described my complainant as a small silver gun, possibly a revolver. Suspects demanded complainants property and fled the location. District Detective was notified and assumed the investigation.

Great Plates of Late Around South Baltimore

Birria Tacos from El Salto 

I’ve been dying to try birria tacos ever since they became a seemingly hot food trend in America. I’ve always loved a good French dip sandwich, so I had a feeling I would be a fan of birria tacos. And, after trying them at El Salto in Brooklyn, I am in love.

The Quesabirria at El Salto are soft tacos with pulled beef, cheese, cilantro, and onions cooked in the consome de birria and topped with tomatillo sauce. The meal also comes with a side of consome de birria for dipping which is a must.

These tacos were so, so good.

Curry Chicken from Taste of Jamaica 

Sweet Home Jamaica in Brooklyn has quickly become one of my favorite places to pick up lunch. It has daily lunch specials, which include a meal and soda, for $8. I previously raved about Taste of Jamaica’s jerk chicken and now I’m about to rave about its curry chicken.

I’ve never had Jamaican-style curry chicken before and clearly I’ve been missing out. This tender chicken had so much zest and flavor, and the sauce seeped down well into the rice and beans in the bowl.

What I order during my next trip to Taste of Jamaica will be a tough decision.

Maccheroni Alla Pescatore at Velleggia’s 

I have been looking forward to trying Velleggia’s at Cross Street Market in Federal Hill for a while and finally made it happen this month. The space has a more upscale feel compared to the rest of the market and has an inviting vibe.

As an entree, we got the Maccheroni Alla Pescatore which has linguini in lemon sauce with lobster, clams, shrimp, parmesan, and micro greens. The pasta was fresh and the sauce has a unique flavor that paired well with the seafood. The lobster really stood out to me.

To go along with our meal, we had some tasty cocktails and the Penzanella salad.

Biscuits and Gravy at Riverside Taphouse 

Riverside Taphouse has been recommended to me many times and recently I took advantage of a free Sunday morning to try out its brunch.

The biscuits with sausage gravy melt in your mouth and are super flavorful. They also came with two eggs.

We also got the Breakfast Wrap that had egg whites, turkey sausage, onion jam, and Swiss cheese in a wheat wrap. It was really good and really filling. The side of breakfast potatoes hit the spot, too.

‘Cookies Baltimore’ Cannabis Dispensary Opening in Federal Hill, Recreational Sales Begin on July 1st

Cookies, a cannabis dispensary with more than 59 locations around the world, is opening in Federal Hill on Saturday. Noxx Cannabis, the parent company of Cookies Baltimore, purchased the medical cannabis license owned by Pure Life Wellness at 35 E. Cross St. and will open in the same retail space.

Recreational cannabis sales will begin in Maryland on July 1st to individuals 21 and older. Cookies Baltimore will begin selling recreational cannabis in July and will sell medical cannabis until then to individuals with MMCC Patient and Caregiver Identification Cards.​

After July 1st, MMCC card holders will not pay the new recreational cannabis taxes.

Cookies was founded by San Francisco Bay-area rapper Berner in 2010.

“I’ve always loved the vibe in Maryland, especially after I experienced our 1st drop on the east coast there,” said Berner in a press release. “The line was long, full of excitement and timeless energy. We are fired up about our 1st official flagship In Maryland and look forward to recreational sales in July.”

Cookies has proprietary products and the Baltimore location will also sell products from other brands. Cannabis will be available as flower, pre-rolls, vape carts, concentrates, and edibles.

Along with cannabis, Cookies Baltimore will sell CBD, rolling papers, trays, and lighters. It will also sell Cookies SF local reserve apparel and accessories.

The dispensary’s interior will have Baltimore-themed murals and artwork.

Cookies Baltimore will be open everyday from 9am to 9pm.

South Baltimore Gateway Partnership Announces $742,708 in Community Grants

South Baltimore Gateway Partnership press release: 

The South Baltimore Gateway Partnership (SBGP) announces $742,708 in Community Grants to support 29 projects across South and Southwest Baltimore. This round of funding attracted proposals totaling more than $2.1 million. Community Grants are awarded based on previously determined criteria, including alignment with strategic goals. SBGP Community Grants funding is provided by the Local Impact Grants generated by video lottery terminals, including at the Horseshoe Casino Baltimore. Since its establishment in 2016, SBGP has committed approximately $26.8 million of core intergovernmental Local Impact Grant funds to projects across the SBGP District, ranging from small community grants to large capital projects.

Community Grants funding ranges from small “spark” grants under $2,000, to large grants reaching up to $100,000, which Paul’s Place in Pigtown was awarded this application cycle. Their Executive Director, Tim Regan says, “We are grateful to be awarded this funding to support the installation of a community kitchen garden on Ward Street. With a garden to grow produce, we’ll be able to turn currently unused space into one that will help us further our mission to address food insecurity and grow public health knowledge around nutrition. We’ll also increase support of the Paul’s Place community kitchen on Ward Street, along with our culinary training program housed at Groundwork Kitchen on Washington Boulevard. This is an exciting opportunity to transform our campus on Ward Street in service to the community.”

A rigorous application review process ensures that awards are distributed equitably and are diverse and inclusive in geographic location and project type. Youth in Westport and Cherry Hill will receive support through Improving Education’s grant. “Early childhood education is the foundation of school and life success, and we’re so proud to collaborate with children, families, and the Head Start program at Westport Academy through our All Children Ready initiative. Funding will allow us to improve Kindergarten readiness while changing the trajectory of student success and empowering children and families to succeed in school,” says Jarrod Bolte, CEO.

In Sharp-Leadenhall, youth support will come in the form of technology assistance. Joyce Dingle, Director of Outreach for theSouth Creek Community Development Corporation says, “We live in an increasingly technological and digital society, and we want to ensure that the students who attend the SHARPkids Program have access to the computers, computer networks, and software to participate in it. We know that access to these tools and resources increases students’ ability to work cooperatively with each other, give peer tutoring, improve motivation, and increase self-esteem.  With this grant, we can continue to support children in Sharp-Leadenhall in enhancing achievements even after the school-day has ended.”

In addition to the projects described above, Community Grants funding will support a variety of other programs:

• The “Green Lions Collaborative” project will bring residents together to grow food, cook, and exchange ideas from different cultures. It will also fully transition a school-based garden into a community-engaged garden and will promote collective action to ensure its maintenance and sustainability. (The University of Maryland Foundation, Inc d/b/a the UMBC Foundation, Lakeland)
• The “Steel Boxes and Signs” project will update garden planters and install signage for gardening and compost bins at two garden sites with approximately 18 community members that currently conduct maintenance and improvement.(Pigtown Food For Thought, Pigtown)
• RICH’s “Youth Leadership Program” will provide year-round youth programming and workforce development offerings including entrepreneurship, photography, modeling, STEM education, rowing, and self-development. The new RICH Juice Bar will generate additional revenue for community-based workforce development. (RICH – Restoring Inner City Hope, Cherry Hill)
• The 31st Annual Federal Hill 4th of July Parade aims to bring together Federal Hill and surrounding communities to celebrate the neighborhoods’ charm and history. (Stars & Stripes Parade Committee, Federal Hill)

In addition to Community Grants, SBGP offers smaller Clean and Green Grants through the Enhanced Services Program. Funding up to $5,000 can support projects in the SBGP District under the following categories: Waste Reduction through Environmental Sustainability (composting, reusable products, etc.), Trash Removal (community cleanups, bulk trash removal, contracts for services, etc.), Capital Investments (trash receptacles, facilities, etc.), and Education & Training, (PSA campaigns, workshops, etc.). Using this grant, Neighborhood Design Center fully-funded their Trash Dash event in April 2023, with over 50 volunteers removing more than 80 bags of trash from Middle Branch Park in Cherry Hill. From BPD:

On 05/07/2023 at approximately 2158 this officer responded to 1200 S Hanover St Papa John’s for a armed robbery. Upon arrival this officer was met by employees who was working at the time of the incident. Employee stated that while she was at the front counter along with another employee an unknown B/M walked in and approached the front counter. Employee was approached by the suspect where he demanded her to open the register and give him the money that was inside. Employee complied open the register and to give him all the money. Employee that she observed the suspect holding a black handgun inside the front of his pants. The suspect then left the location and headed northbound on S Hanover St. Suspect was seen wearing a black hoodie with a Ravens logo, black pants, grey New Balance sneakers, and a ski mask. This officer notified City wide robbery who responded to scene. Victim information provided.

On 5 May 2023 at approximately 0015 hours, your writer responded to an Armed Robbery call for service. Victim stated that he was walking in the 100 Blk of Cross Street at approximately 0045 hours when the unknown suspect approached him from behind. Victim explained that said suspect produced a black handgun and stated, “kick it out”. Victim stated he placed his wallet and cell phone on the side metal porch of the residence in the area. The suspect ordered victim to walk towards William Street and he complied. Victim returned to the porch area finding his phone still in place. Suspect fled the scene on foot heading down Cross Street towards Light Street. District Detectives assumed the investigation.

The Federal Hill Neighborhood Association (FHNA) is pleased to announce we will be hosting a Federal Hill House & Garden House Tour on Sunday, May 21st from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm.  Tickets are $35 in advance and $40 at the door.  We are partnering with Maryland House & Garden Pilgrimage to produce the tour.  We hope you can join us!

Federal Hill Lunch Options 

There are several restaurants within a few blocks walking distance from the featured homes on the tour. These include a broad mix of both American and various ethnic cuisines.

Additionally, two (2) of our local restaurants, Mother’s Federal Hill Grille and Watershed will be offering prix fixe menus ($20 Excluding Tip) the day of the tour.

PARKING:

Recommend using the West Street Garage (40 E. West Street/ 410-783-4497) which is one block from the Cross Street Market where our House Tour Info Booth is located. You can also utilize street parking near the Cross Street Market located at 1065 S. Charles Street.

If you have a State issued handicap parking permit, we have reserved parking for you at Federal Hill Prep Elementary School located at 1040 William Street.

Please follow the Maryland House & Garden Pilgrimage (MHGP) signage to the home sites from the West Street Garage, Cross Street Market and the designated handicap parking lot.
